A photography project has highlighted the extent of ice loss from Iceland’s largest glaciers. A team from Scotland and Iceland compared photographs taken in the 1980s with present-day drone images. They focused on the south side of the Vatnajökull ice cap, which covers about 7,700sq km of land. Dr Kieran Baxter, from the University of Dundee, said: "We saw a staggering difference in a very short amount of time."

Scotland hosted the first two World Forums on Natural Capital in 2013 and 2015, and we are delighted to be hosting this third one. I’m grateful to the Scottish Wildlife Trust for organising this event. I also want to thank the associate partners – the United Nations Environment Programme; the Natural Capital Coalition; the Green Economy Coalition; the World Business Council for Sustainable Development; and the International Union for Conservation of Nature. This is actually the third big environmental event I’ve had the privilege of speaking at in the last fortnight. Two weeks ago I addressed the United Nations Climate Chance Conference in Bonn, and last week I welcomed delegates to Edinburgh for Scotland’s first ever Arctic Circle Forum, which had a strong environmental focus.

Ces deux dernières années, Sea Shepherd UK a mené campagne* activement pour protéger les phoques communs et gris d’Écosse et éviter qu’ils ne soient abattus par les plus grands tueurs de phoques du Royaume-Uni : les compagnies écossaises de pêche de saumon sauvage.

Studying the at-sea movements and behaviour of juvenile seabirds is logistically challenging, but new technologies now allow tracking birds on their first migration, giving a more complete picture of population-level spatial ecology. We investigated the post-fledging migration of juvenile northern gannets Morus bassanus from the world's largest colony, at Bass Rock, Scotland. We first examined the movements and survival of 38 juveniles over their initial days at sea with GPS precision for up to 53 d post-fledging. We then compared their migration journeys with those of 35 adults tracked with geolocators.

An extensive and impartial study to assess people’s views about the possible reintroduction of Eurasian lynx to the Scottish Highlands is being launched this month by a new partnership of the charities SCOTLAND: The Big Picture, Trees for Life and Vincent Wildlife Trust.Ecological research has shown that extensive areas of Scotland could support lynx, but the charities say returning the shy and elusive animal is less about science and more about people’s willingness to live alongside a species that’s become forgotten on these shores.

It seems that David Attenborough’s programme Extinction: the facts moved many people to tears. To me, that is an entirely rational response to the ongoing destruction to the natural world. This relentless loss of the beauty and wonder of our planet not only corrodes the soul, it compromises our own species’ prosperity. But, as I wrote on Friday, grief needs to be matched with a determination to change, bolstered by the belief that we know what it takes to make things better. Today must be the moment that we choose a different path and take steps to revive our world. The Global Biodiversity Outlook 5 (GBO5) will be published later today and will reveal that the world has largely failed in its collective efforts to save nature over the last decade, and none of the targets (set under the UN's Convention on Biological Diversity - the CBD) have been fully met. To pre-empt this, we launched A Lost Decade for Nature, which shines a light on the UK’s limited contribution towards these global biodiversity targets. According to the UK Government’s own assessment of performance, we will miss over two thirds of our commitments for nature made in 2010 (14 out of 20).

Although the relationships between habitats and ecosystem services (ESs) have been acknowledged, investigating spatio-temporal change in these has received far less attention. This study assesses the influence of habitat changes on ES delivery across space and time, based on two time points some 60 years apart, 1946 and 2009. A 1946 aerial photo coverage of two catchments in Scotland was used to construct digital photo mosaics which were then visually interpreted and digitised to derive historic habitat maps.
