James Shaw says country is entering ‘period of consequences’ for inaction over climate change as extreme weather wreaks havoc across the North Island

Le nombre d’espèces marines peuplant habituellement les eaux des mers équatoriales a diminué de moitié en quarante ans en raison du réchauffement climatique, selon une étude dirigée par l’Université d’Auckland en Nouvelle-Zélande publiée ce lundi 5 avril. Une évolution fruit non d’une disparition de ces animaux mais de leur migration, vers les zones subtropicales notamment.

Cette découverte révèle que les eaux tropicales, jusqu’ici considérées comme stables à l’échelle de la planète et particulièrement propices à la vie, sont à leur tour touchées.

Selon une étude publiée ce lundi, le niveau de la mer pourrait augmenter de près d'un mètre dans plusieurs parties de l'archipel. Les villes de Wellington et d'Auckland seraient particulièrement vulnérables aux inondations. Sur le front de mer, des milliers d'habitants devraient être relocalisés.

“Many of New Zealand’s plants and wildlife species are found nowhere else on Earth. They are ancient and unique – we have giant invertebrates, flightless birds, penguins that live in the forest, trees that can live for over a thousand years, and the smallest dolphin in the world. These creatures and plants have been isolated to the islands and waters of Aotearoa since the days of the dinosaurs” said Eugenie Sage.
