Un couloir marin de 1.350 km de long et de 46.385 km2 au total, situé au large des côtes espagnoles, a été déclaré "aire marine protégée" par l'Espagne. Cette mesure devrait protéger 3.500 rorquals communs. Il a aussi été proposé pour inclusion sur la liste des Aires spécialement protégées d'importance méditerranéenne (ASPIM), dans le cadre de la Convention de Barcelone pour la protection du milieu marin et du littoral de la Méditerranée.
