Dans un plan dévoilé ce mardi, la Commission européenne détaille ses ambitions pour la pêche : plus d'aires marines protégées, chalutage interdit dans celles-ci, meilleure exploitation des stocks de poissons et bateaux moins énergivores.

new agreement is being negotiated under the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) to provide legally binding mechanisms to protect the marine environment and to conserve and ensure the sustainable use of marine biodiversity on the high seas (international waters in areas beyond national jurisdiction) (1). One of the suggested objectives in the current draft text is to “apply an approach that builds ecosystem resilience to the adverse effects of climate change” when applying area-based management tools (ABMTs), including marine protected areas (MPAs).

Favoriser une gestion intégrée et pérenne du Grand dauphin sur la façade méditerranéenne française à travers le réseau des aires marines protégées (AMP), c’est le but du projet Tursmed initié en 2018 et renouvelé jusqu’en 2023 dans le cadre d’un contrat R&D entre l’OFB et l’association Miraceti. Les premiers résultats et outils sont désormais disponibles, notamment pour les acteurs des AMP impliqués dans la préservation de l’espèce.

In the French West Indies, more than 20 species of cetaceans have been observed over the last decades. The recognition of this hot spot of biodiversity of marine mammals observed in the French Exclusive Economic Zone of the West Indies motivated the French government to create in 2010 a marine protected area (MPA) dedicated to the conservation of marine mammals: the Agoa sanctuary. Threats that cetacean populations face are multiple but well-documented. Cetacean conservation can only be achieved if relevant and reliable data are available, starting by occurrence data. 

University researchers say climate change needs to be taken into greater account when it comes to the creation and management of marine protected areas.

Derek Tittensor, an associate professor in Dalhousie University's biology department, was lead author of the recently released paper on the topic.

L’atelier consacré aux Aires marines importantes pour les mammifères marins (Important Marine Mammals Areas - IMMA) de l’océan austral, s’est tenu à Brest du 15 au 19 octobre dernier. L’événement a permis d’identifier 15 zones marines répondant aux critères des IMMA.

Cette démarche scientifique conduite par la Task force « mammifères marins » de l’Union mondiale pour la conservation de la nature (UICN), est soutenue par l’Agence française pour la biodiversité (AFB).

The first international goal for establishing marine protected areas (MPAs) to conserve the ocean’s biodiversity was set in 2002. Since 2006, the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has driven MPA establishment, with 193 parties committed to protecting >10% of marine environments globally by 2020, especially ‘areas of particular importance for biodiversity’ (Aichi target 11).
