Memories of home Most animals spend the majority of their lives within a familiar home range. Cognitive tests on pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) support the hypothesis that spatial reference memory underlies the ability to develop a home range, as well as suggesting its critical role in allowing birds to become familiar enough with the landscape to avoid ambush predators.

This book provides an assessment of the effectiveness of 2526 conservation interventions based on summarized scientific evidence. The 2021 edition containssubstantial new material on bat conservation, terrestrial mammal conservation and marine and freshwater mammals, thus completing the evidence for all mammal species categories. Other chapters cover practical global conservation of primates, amphibians, bats, birds, forests, peatlands, subtidal benthic invertebrates, shrublands and heathlands, as well as the conservation of European farmland biodiversity and some aspects of enhancing natural pest control, enhancing soil fertility, management of captive animals and control of freshwater invasive species.

Van Klink et al. (Reports, 24 April 2020, p. 417) argue for a more nuanced view of insect decline, and of human responsibility for this decline, than previously suggested. However, shortcomings in data selection and methodology raise questions about their conclusions on trends and drivers. We call for more rigorous methodology to be applied in meta-analyses of ecological data.

Since 1986, this conference has been an important forum for the exchange of information between statisticians and biologists on analytical techniques and their applications. The focus is usually on the development, understanding and integration of statistical methods for estimation and inference on animal population dynamics and demography, with data on marked individuals (via ringing/banding, DNA sequencing, GPS tags, etc).

The Transformative Change Assessment of IPBES will examine how better biodiversity conservation and sustainable use, ecosystem service delivery and restoration can be achieved, considering the totality of the socio-ecological system. In this regard, it is also important to understand and identify factors in human society at both the individual and collective levels, e.g., the tragedy of the commons exemplifies how individual self-interest can act against the common good of all.

The UN General Assembly in September, 2021, will bring countries together at a critical time for marshalling collective action to tackle the global environmental crisis. They will meet again at the biodiversity summit in Kunming, China, and the UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) in Glasgow, UK. Ahead of these pivotal meetings,we—the editors of health journals worldwide—call for urgent action to keep average global temperature increases below 1·5°C, halt the destruction of nature, and protect health.
