The concept of Green Infrastructure incorporates social, economic, and environmental benefits: water clearly provides us with all three of these, and is essential to protect. From providing a habitat in its own right to supporting other habitats, from enabling human life to making industry possible, water is crucial for humans and our surrounding ecosystems. The EU’s Water Framework Directive aims to enable sustainable water policy, and Green Infrastructure can play an important role in that by creating structures that support a healthy water cycle so vitally needed water is available to ecosystems and humans alike.

The EU Water Framework and Floods Directives have not only set the level of ambition for water resources management in Europe, but have also provided a model for other regions in the world. Effective implementation of the Directives requires that due consideration be given to their economic pillar, designed to support a cost-effective approach in member states and communities. Recent reviews indicate that there is considerable room to improve the integration of water economics within the framework of water resources management. This report captures the lessons learned from five thematic workshops co-convened by the OECD and the European Commission.

An analysis of 13 case studies aiming to integrate improvement of ecological conditions and flood risk mitigation

The analysis has been carried out through a review of existing databases, including the LIFE+ RESTORE wiki, the FP7 REFORM wiki, and some national databases. This report aims to underpin the replication of successful river restoration initiatives across the regions and to give suggestions on how to improve the way that European water policy can be implemented.
