Indigenous Peoples call for better integration of human rights into natural World Heritage conservation

Members of Indigenous communities living in or close to African World Heritage sites have highlighted how site conservation can be more effective when it considers human rights, last week at UNESCO’s 41st session of the World Heritage Committee, taking place in Kraków, Poland. The interventions were part of a side event organised by the Indigenous Peoples of Africa Coordinating Committee (IPACC), an IUCN Member, showcasing Indigenous Peoples’ efforts to promote human and cultural rights in the context of World Heritage.

Area-based conservation: Taking stock and looking ahead

Area-based conservation: Taking stock and looking ahead | Biodiversité | Scoop.it

Area-based conservation, including protected areas and OECMs, is the primary approach used to address biodiversity decline and now covers 8% of the world’s oceans and 17% of its lands. As it is set to diversify and expand under the 30x30 target to protect30% of the planet by 2030, we take stock of the approach, including its history in global policy and performance. We outline three priority directions to ensure area-based
conservation contributes to securing a sustainable and just future.

Ecology and Society : The role of Indigenous peoples and local communities in effective and equitable conservation

Ecology and Society : The role of Indigenous peoples and local communities in effective and equitable conservation | Biodiversité | Scoop.it

Debate about what proportion of the Earth to protect often overshadows the question of how nature should be conserved and by whom. We present a systematic review and narrative synthesis of 169 publications investigating how different forms of governance influence conservation outcomes, paying particular attention to the role played by Indigenous peoples and local communities. We find a stark contrast between the outcomes produced by externally controlled conservation, and those produced by locally controlled efforts.
