Les bénéfices écologiques, économiques et sociaux fournis par ces aires marines protégées (AMP) ont déjà été largement documentés. Cette nouvelle étude, basée sur une analyse de 22,403 publications traitant de 241 AMP à travers le monde, a révélé que la protection peut également contribuer de manière décisive à l’atténuation des effets du changement climatique (séquestration du carbone, évitement de son relâchement, etc.) ainsi qu’à l’adaptation des systèmes socio-écologiques...

De nombreuses îles ont une forte biodiversité mais sont aussi des épicentres d’extinction. Cette biodiversité étant souvent la seule richesse de ces territoires isolés, mieux la protéger est une priorité pour l’adaptation des systèmes insulaires aux changements environnementaux. En constituant une base de données mondiale pour 2323 îles habitées, des scientifiques, dont une équipe du Centre pour la biodiversité marine, l'exploitation et la conservation (MARBEC), montrent que 50 % de ces îles n’ont aucune aire protégée. Cette absence de protection dépend à la fois du climat, de la diversité culturelle, de la densité humaine et du niveau de développement.

University researchers say climate change needs to be taken into greater account when it comes to the creation and management of marine protected areas. Derek Tittensor, an associate professor in Dalhousie University's biology department, was lead author of the recently released paper on the topic.

Coastal states are well positioned to make use of MPAs for ecosystem-based adaptation and mitigation as a ‘no-regret’ climate change strategy. Processes such as Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) and Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) can be used by countries to improve the management of MPAs...

Les aires marines protégées ont un rôle à jouer dans la lutte contre le réchauffement climatique. C'est ce que soutiennent la France, le Chili, le Costa Rica, le Royaume-Uni et les Etats-Unis. Le 2 juin dernier, l'Office français de la biodiversité a annoncé un partenariat international entre les agences de protection du milieu marin de ces cinq pays. Le but ? Promouvoir les aires marines protégées comme des outils de lutte contre le changement climatique auprès des dirigeants mondiaux. Il s'agit de l'international partnership on MPAs, biodiversity and climate change.

new agreement is being negotiated under the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) to provide legally binding mechanisms to protect the marine environment and to conserve and ensure the sustainable use of marine biodiversity on the high seas (international waters in areas beyond national jurisdiction) (1). One of the suggested objectives in the current draft text is to “apply an approach that builds ecosystem resilience to the adverse effects of climate change” when applying area-based management tools (ABMTs), including marine protected areas (MPAs).

This final conference intends to capitalize the main results of the work undertaken during the project so as to enable the exchange of knowledge, experiences, learnings and good practices from the development of action plans for climate change adaptation and their integration into existing management frameworks of marine protected areas (MPA).
