Life on planet Earth is under siege. We are now in an uncharted territory. For several decades, scientists have consistently warned of a future marked by extreme climatic conditions because of escalating global temperatures caused by ongoing human activities that release harmful greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere. Unfortunately, time is up. We are seeing the manifestation of those predictions as an alarming and unprecedented succession of climate records are broken, causing profoundly distressing scenes of suffering to unfold. 

Sustaining the organisms, ecosystems and processes that underpin human wellbeing is necessary to achieve sustainable development. Here we define critical natural assets as the natural and semi-natural ecosystems that provide 90% of the total current magnitude of 14 types of nature’s contributions to people (NCP), and we map the global locations of these critical natural assets at 2 km resolution. Critical natural assets for maintaining local-scale NCP (12 of the 14 NCP) account for 30% of total global land area and 24% of national territorial waters, while 44% of land area is required to also maintain two global-scale NCP (carbon storage and moisture recycling).

Un nouveau rapport des Nations Unies met en évidence la nécessité de renforcer les mesures de gestion. Il fait état d’une diminution de l’exploitation excessive dans la région, particulièrement en ce qui concerne les espèces essentielles faisant l’objet de plans de gestion multilatéraux. Toutefois, 73 pour cent des espèces commerciales sont encore surexploitées et la pression de pêche, quoique moins forte que dans le passé, reste le double de ce qui est considéré comme durable.
