Global urban environmental change drives adaptation in white clover

Global urban environmental change drives adaptation in white clover | Biodiversité | Scoop.it

Urbanization transforms environments in ways that alter biological evolution. We examined whether urban environmental change drives parallel evolution by sampling 110,019 white clover plants from 6169 populations in 160 cities globally. Plants were assayed for a Mendelian antiherbivore defense that also affects tolerance to abiotic stressors. Urban-rural gradients were associated with the evolution of clines in defense in 47% of cities throughout the world.

Continent-wide genomic signatures of adaptation to urbanisation in a songbird across Europe

Continent-wide genomic signatures of adaptation to urbanisation in a songbird across Europe | Biodiversité | Scoop.it

Urbanisation is increasing worldwide, and there is now ample evidence of phenotypic changes in wild organisms in response to this novel environment. Yet, the genetic changes and genomic architecture underlying these adaptations are poorly understood. Here, we genotype 192 great tits (Parus major) from nine European cities, each paired with an adjacent rural site, to address this major knowledge gap in our understanding of wildlife urban adaptation.
