Through the Habitats Directive (92/43/EEC) and the financial investments of the LIFE projects, Europe has become an experimental arena for biological conservation. With an estimated annual budget of €20 billion, the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 has set an ambitious goal of classifying 30% of its land and sea territory as Protected Areas and ensuring no deterioration in conservation trends and the status of protected species. We analysed LIFE projects focused on animals from 1992 to 2018 and found that investment in vertebrates was six times higher than that for invertebrates (€970 versus €150 million), with birds and mammals alone accounting for 72% of species and 75% of the total budget. In relative terms, investment per species towards vertebrates has been 468 times higher than that for invertebrates.

Efforts to stem the decline of monarch butterflies took a giant leap forward today with the completion of a historic agreement between the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the University of Illinois-Chicago. The agreement encourages transportation and energy partners to participate in monarch conservation by providing and maintaining habitat on potentially millions of acres of rights-of-way and associated lands.

We provide the first annotated checklist of the Heteroptera (Insecta: Hemiptera) of the Site of Community Importance and Special Area of Conservation “Alpi Marittime” (IT1160056), based on literature records and unpublished material collected between 2012-2015 within two European projects in which the Alpi Marittime Nature Park was involved. The literature review provided a list of 62 species, recorded for the study area between 1884 and 1990, scattered in 14 papers. The new data here provided raise the total number of species occurring in this region to 208, grouped in 25 families and 135 genera.

The big butterfly count is a nationwide survey aimed at helping us assess the health of our environment. It was launched in 2010 and has rapidly become the world's biggest survey of butterflies. Over 36,000 people took part in 2016, counting almost 400,000 individual butterflies and day-flying moths across the UK (see the 2016 results). big butterfly count 2017 will take place from Friday 14 July to Sunday 6 August.

Comment en finir avec le printemps silencieux ? Comme le disait Rachel Carson en son temps, « l’homme fait partie de la nature et sa guerre contre la nature est fatalement une guerre contre lui-même. » En effet, tous les insectes ont leur place dans ce monde en partage et ils jouent un rôle fondamental dans l’équilibre des écosystèmes.

This book provides an assessment of the effectiveness of 2526 conservation interventions based on summarized scientific evidence. The 2021 edition containssubstantial new material on bat conservation, terrestrial mammal conservation and marine and freshwater mammals, thus completing the evidence for all mammal species categories. Other chapters cover practical global conservation of primates, amphibians, bats, birds, forests, peatlands, subtidal benthic invertebrates, shrublands and heathlands, as well as the conservation of European farmland biodiversity and some aspects of enhancing natural pest control, enhancing soil fertility, management of captive animals and control of freshwater invasive species.

Les insectes coléoptères, riches de 2 663 espèces attachées à 74 familles en France, et qui dominent le cortège saproxylique avec les champignons, constituent ainsi un groupe indicateur fréquemment utilisé dans le monde forestier. Le suivi de cette riche biodiversité représente toutefois un véritable défi. En effet, trente ans après la prescription du Conseil de l’Europe, qui encourageait les gouvernements européens à utiliser prioritairement les organismes saproxyliques pour évaluer l’état de conservation des forêts, peu d’outils sont disponibles pour assurer cette mission. Since two decades the richness and potential of natural history collections (NHC) were rediscovered and emphasized, promoting a revolution in the access on data of species occurrence, and fostering the development of several disciplines. Nevertheless, due to their inherent erratic nature, NHC data are plagued by several biases. Understanding these biases is a major issue, particularly because ecological niche models (ENMs) are based on the assumption that data are not biased.

Depuis plusieurs années, l'unité observatoire conservatoire des insectes de Corse (OCIC) de l'office de l'Environnement de la Corse travaille sur deux dispositifs de conservation.
