Elle fournit en particulier des statistiques détaillées sur les émissions de gaz à effet de serre dans le monde, en Europe et en France.

The latest State of Nature Report rings yet another alarm bell on the biodiversity crisis in the UK, showing major declines in many species since monitoring began in 1970. Since this date, species have declined by 19% on average and one in six are now at risk of being lost in the UK.

This dataset is the result of a systematic mapping of the application of nature-based solutions (NbS) to climate change adaptation in urban areas across the world. We screened 823 potential urban NbS to climate adaptation, which resulted in the inclusion of 216 interventions worldwide from 130 cities in 55 countries within our dataset. We analysed each of the NbS according to key characteristics in terms of how these interventions are helping cities confront the grave climate change, biodiversity, and related social challenges they are facing.

When an expert volunteer is walking through a sunny meadow recording butterflies or searching by torchlight for newts, it can seem a long way from the negotiating halls of Convention on Biological Diversity meetings or from civil servants drafting new legislation.

But trends in species’ abundance, distribution or extinction risk, derived from monitoring and recording schemes, have wide influence in developing and monitoring environmental strategies, agreements and legislation.

Individual species status assessments underpin the lists of priority species within each of the four UK countries. For example, the Environment (Wales) Act 2016 gives Welsh ministers the responsibility ‘maintain and enhance’ species on the Section 7 list. However, many uses of species’ status information come from creating composite measures giving an overview of the status of a taxonomic group, habitat type or of species in general.

Rapid biodiversity loss has prompted global action to prevent further declines, yet coordinated conservation action among nations remains elusive. As a result, species with ranges that span international borders—which include 53.8% of terrestrial birds, mammals and amphibians—are in increasing peril through uncoordinated management and artificial barriers to human movement, such as border fences. Transboundary conservation initiatives represent a unique opportunity to better protect species through coordinated management across national borders.

Cette publication propose un éclairage sur le cadre conceptuel des neuf limites planétaires tel qu’il a été défini en 2015 (Steffen et al.). Twenty-five years since foundational publications on valuing ecosystem services for human well-being1,2, addressing the global biodiversity crisis3 still implies confronting barriers to incorporating nature’s diverse values into decision-making. These barriers include powerful interests supported by current norms and legal rules such as property rights, which determine whose values and which values of nature are acted on. A better understanding of how and why nature is (under)valued is more urgent than ever4. Notwithstanding agreements to incorporate nature’s values into actions, including the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF)5 and the UN Sustainable Development Goals6, predominant environmental and development policies still prioritize a subset of values, particularly those linked to markets, and ignore other ways people relate to and benefit from nature7. Arguably, a ‘values crisis’ underpins the intertwined crises of biodiversity loss and climate change8, pandemic emergence9 and socio-environmental injustices10.

Since their adoption in 2015, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with their ambition to be universal and indivisible, have become a dominant framework to discuss development matters, especially on the international stage. This work aims at bringing information on whether or not the SDGs provide a good mapping of development priorities as expressed by countries. We develop a new analysis of the SDG framework (within the 2030 Agenda) by systematically mapping the national development priorities displayed by 121 countries in their long-term development documents.

Ces indices dits « composites » agrègent ainsi des indicateurs individuels portant sur des thématiques différentes comme le changement climatique, la qualité de l’air et de l’eau, ou la politique de protection de la biodiversité.
