Predicting drought-induced mortality (DIM) of woody plants remains a key research challenge under climate change. Here, we integrate information on the edaphoclimatic niches, phylogeny and hydraulic traits of species to model the hydraulic risk of woody plants globally. We combine these models with species distribution records to estimate the hydraulic risk faced by local woody plant species assemblages. Thus, we produce global maps of hydraulic risk and test for its relationship with observed DIM.

Un collectif de 16 organisations de conservation a publié un nouveau rapport sur la situation des poissons d'eau douce à travers le monde. Un tiers des espèces sont aujourd'hui menacées d'extinction et certaines ont chuté de 76% depuis les années 1970.

Freshwater fish have been widely introduced worldwide, and freshwater ecosystems are among the most affected by biological invasions. Consequently, freshwater fish invasions are one of the most documented invasions among animal taxa, with much information available about invasive species, their characteristics, invaded regions, invasion pathways, impacts, and management. While existing reviews address specific aspects of freshwater fish invasions, there is still a gaping lack of comprehensive assessments of freshwater fish invasions that simultaneously address pivotal and connected elements of the invasion process. Here, we provide a holistic review, together with quantitative assessments, divided into four major parts: (1) introduction pathways; (2) characteristics of non-native species and invaded ecosystems to explain successful invasion processes; (3) invasion impacts and their mechanisms; and (4) management.

The study focused for the first time on the impacts that plastic pollution has on animals that live on land and in freshwater environments, in the Asia-Pacific region. The study included case studies on the Ganges and Mekong river basins, which together contribute an estimated 200,000 tons of plastic pollution to the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean every year.

Si rien n’est fait, elle pourrait augmenter de manière considérable dans les prochaines années, en raison du vieillissement de la population notamment.

Freshwater biodiversity is facing unprecedented levels of threat. Through The River Bank we aim to raise awareness about these delicate ecosystems and raise the necessary funds to put more freshwater species on the map, leading to conservation action on the ground.
