Unmanaged = Unprotected: Europe’s marine paper parks

Unmanaged = Unprotected: Europe’s marine paper parks | Biodiversité | Scoop.it

In the face of intense human pressure on European seas, a network of well-managed marine protected areas (MPAs) is critical for marine biodiversity protection. In 2018, the EU (including, at the time, the United Kingdom) declared having met international targets for marine conservation, by designating more than 10% of its waters as MPAs. However, this declaration of success ignored the fact that designation is just one step towards achieving real protection. Without effective management, designated MPAs remain mere ‘paper parks’ that provide little to no actual protection.

Fitness Check of the Birds and Habitats Directives - Environment - European Commission

Commission evaluation shows Nature Directives are fit for purpose On 16/12/2016 the Commission has published the 'Fitness Check' evaluation of the EU Birds and Habitats Directives (the 'Nature Directives') and concluded that, within the framework of broader EU biodiversity policy, they remain highly relevant and are fit for purpose. However, full achievement of the objectives of the Nature Directives will depend on substantial improvement in their implementation in close partnership with local authorities and different stakeholders in the Member States to deliver practical results on the ground for nature, people and the economy in the EU.

Effectiveness of the European Natura 2000 network at protecting Western Europe's agro-steppes - ScienceDirect

Effectiveness of the European Natura 2000 network at protecting Western Europe's agro-steppes - ScienceDirect | Biodiversité | Scoop.it

Assessing progress towards achieving conservation targets is required for all countries committed to the Convention on Biological Diversity. The Natura 2000 network is the largest protected area network in the world and was created to protect Europe's threatened species and habitats, often requiring active management. This study assesses the effectiveness of areas classified under the EU Birds Directive at protecting Western Europe's agro-steppes, the last remnants of suitable habitat for several endangered bird species. We quantify agro-steppe habitat change in the last 10 years using high-resolution aerial images of 21 Special Protection Areas and surrounding areas.

Water - CEEweb for Biodiversity

Water - CEEweb for Biodiversity | Biodiversité | Scoop.it

The concept of Green Infrastructure incorporates social, economic, and environmental benefits: water clearly provides us with all three of these, and is essential to protect. From providing a habitat in its own right to supporting other habitats, from enabling human life to making industry possible, water is crucial for humans and our surrounding ecosystems. The EU’s Water Framework Directive aims to enable sustainable water policy, and Green Infrastructure can play an important role in that by creating structures that support a healthy water cycle so vitally needed water is available to ecosystems and humans alike.
