Le Programme multilatéral de coopération transfrontalière "Bassin Maritime Méditerranée" fait partie de la nouvelle Politique Européenne de Voisinage et de son instrument financier (IEVP) pour la période 2007-2013: il inclut les régions de l'UE et celles des pays partenaires situées le long des côtes de la mer Méditerranée.

C’est à une entreprise d’ampleur planétaire que se sont attelés plusieurs dizaines de chercheurs qui, sous l’égide des Jardins botaniques royaux de Kew (Royaume-Uni), ont publié le 10 mai le premier rapport annuel sur l’état des plantes dans le monde. Ils ont passé en revue toute la littérature scientifique et écumé les bases de données non seulement pour faire le point sur ce que savent les botanistes mais aussi, dit l’introduction de ce rapport, pour mettre en lumière « ce que nous ne savons pas. ... »

We have come a long way in our understanding of introduced species in the century since publication of the Journal of Ecology began. One hundred years ago, introductions were widely celebrated, and acclimatization societies were busy ‘enriching’ the flora and fauna in many regions world-wide.

On the diversity of plants, we can report that there are now an estimated ~391,000 vascular plants known to science of which 369,000 are flowering plants. Around 2000 new vascular plant species are described each year. In 2015 these included a massive leguminous tree (Gilbertiodendron maximum), more than 90 species of Begonia, 13 new species from the onion family, and discovery of a close relative of sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas). Most were found during fieldwork, some in herbarium specimens, while one of the largest carnivorous plants known (1.5m in height) a new insect-eating plant, Drosera magnifica was first discovered on Facebook. However, there are still large parts of the world where very little is known about the plants. Identification of these important plant areas is now critical. Similarly, we still only know a fraction of the genetic diversity of plants and whole-genome sequences are currently available for just 139 species of vascular plants.
