MPs make history by passing Commons motion to declare ‘environment and climate change emergency’

MPs make history by passing Commons motion to declare ‘environment and climate change emergency’ | Biodiversité | Scoop.it
MPs have passed a motion making the UK parliament the first in the world to declare an “environment and climate emergency”. The symbolic move – recognising the urgency needed to combat the climate crisis – follows a wave of protests launched by the Extinction Rebellion strikers in recent weeks. Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn called for the motion to “set off a wave of action from

Marine protected areas show low overlap with projected distributions of seabird populations in Britain and Ireland

Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are an important tool for the conservation of seabirds. However, mapping seabird distributions using at-sea surveys or tracking data to inform the designation of MPAs is costly and time-consuming, particularly for far-ranging pelagic species. Here we explore the potential for using predictive distribution models to examine the effectiveness of current MPAs for the conservation of seabirds, using Britain and Ireland as a case study.

Our House Is Burning: Discrepancy in Climate Change vs. Biodiversity Coverage in the Media as Compared to Scientific Literature | Ecology and Evolution

Our House Is Burning: Discrepancy in Climate Change vs. Biodiversity Coverage in the Media as Compared to Scientific Literature | Ecology and Evolution | Biodiversité | Scoop.it

Scientists, policy makers and journalists are three key, interconnected players involved in prioritizing and implementing solutions to mitigate the consequences of anthropogenic pressures on the environment. The way in which information is framed and expertise is communicated by the media is crucial for political decisions and for the integrated management of environmental issues. Here we present a comparative study of scientific literature and press articles addressing climate change and biodiversity. We extensively scrutinized the scientific literature, research funding and press articles from the USA, Canada and United Kingdom addressing climate change and biodiversity issues between 1991 and 2016.

Ireland’s wintering waterbird numbers down by 40% in less than 20 years

Ireland’s wintering waterbird numbers down by 40% in less than 20 years | Biodiversité | Scoop.it

A new study by BirdWatch Ireland, published in the latest issue of its annual scientific journal, Irish Birds, has found that the number of waterbirds wintering in Ireland has declined by 15% over the past five years. More alarming is the comparison over a longer time period, which shows that our wintering waterbirds have declined by almost 500,000 individuals (40%) since the mid-1990’s, a truly shocking finding.
