“Biodiversity and nature’s contributions to people sound, to many people, academic and far removed from our daily lives,” said the Chair of IPBES, Sir Robert Watson, “Nothing could be further from the truth – they are the bedrock of our food, clean water and energy. They are at the heart not only of our survival, but of our cultures, identities and enjoyment of life. The best available evidence, gathered by the world’s leading experts, points us now to a single conclusion: we must act to halt and reverse the unsustainable use of nature – or risk not only the future we want, but even the lives we currently lead. Fortunately, the evidence also shows that we know how to protect and partially restore our vital natural assets.”

The report focuses on the Nordic coast since the Nordic countries have this environment in common and it is significant for the historical and economic development of coastal areas. The aim is to highlight the Nordic coastal biodiversity and ecosystem services, as well as drivers affecting them and policy options for their conservation and sustainable use. The report brings together a wide variety of knowledge from science, humanities and other knowledge systems such as traditional knowledge.

The guest editors, Sandra Luque, Christine Fürst and Davide Geneletti, are delighted to share twelve exciting papers with you, that have been published in a Special Issue on Ecosystem Services Nexus Thinking. ‘Nexus thinking’ is understood as the ability to hold key developmental variables together, when searching for solutions at different levels within a holistic landscape approach. The central question that features prominently in this Special Issue is: How can we make choices about land use to address multifunctional landscape planning needs?

Environmental Values is an international peer-reviewed journal that brings together contributions from philosophy, economics, politics, sociology, geography, anthropology, ecology and other disciplines, which relate to the present and future environment of human beings and other species. In doing so we aim to clarify the relationship between practical policy issues and more fundamental underlying principles or assumptions.

Terrestrial, freshwater, and marine ecosystems are connected via multiple biophysical and ecological processes. Identifying and quantifying links among ecosystems is necessary for the uptake of integrated conservation actions across realms. Such actions are particularly important for species using habitats in more than one realm during their daily or life cycle. We reviewed information on the habitats of 2,408 species of European conservation concern and found that 30% of the species use habitats in multiple realms. Transportation and service corridors, which fragment species habitats, were identified as the most important threat impacting ∼70% of the species. We examined information on 1,567 European Union (EU) conservation projects funded over the past 25 years, to assess the adequacy of efforts toward the conservation of “multi‐realm” species at a continental scale. We discovered that less than a third of multi‐realm species benefited from projects that included conservation actions across multiple realms. To achieve the EU's conservation target of halting biodiversity loss by 2020 and effectively protect multi‐realm species, integrated conservation efforts across realms should be reinforced by: (1) recognizing the need for integrated management at a policy level, (2) revising conservation funding priorities across realms, and (3) implementing integrated land‐freshwater‐sea conservation planning and management.

Entre 2014 et 2016, les forêts primaires ont perdu chaque année une surface de 90.000 km2, équivalente à celle de l'Autriche, et le rythme de destruction s'accélère depuis le début du siècle, selon des résultats présentés cette semaine.
The Ecosystem Services Partnership (ESP) is proud to announce its first regional conference in the MENA region. We invite everyone with an interest in the region and ecosystem services to take part in this event. The theme will be 'Enhancing ecosystem services through ecological restoration for nature and people'.Rapid land degradation, unsustainable land use and weak land use planning (including weak rangeland management) desertification, increasing draught and decreasing vegetation cover, as well as severe climate change vulnerability, might be the crucial, dominant issues that most MENA countries have in common. Understanding that ecosystem services are not lost forever once an area and/or landscape element are degraded heavily, but that restoration measures and rehabilitation programmes can also successfully revive ecosystem services is crucial.

Ecosystems at the 8th World Water Forum Natural ecosystems are strongly dependent of the presence of adequate amounts of proper quality water. The ecological services that come from the natural dynamics of hydric systems promote the physical, biological and chemistry processes that generate, sustain and guarantee most forms of life. Also human beings depend directly on these water ecological services. Due to its key role for biodiversity sustainability, it is of upmost importance to monitor, manage and restore aquatic ecosystems. It is crucial to increase the efforts to value the ecological role of aquatic ecosystems and environmental services as they relate to water.

The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) is the intergovernmental body which assesses the state of biodiversity and of the ecosystem services it provides to society, in response to requests from decision makers. IPBES is placed under the auspices of four United Nations entities: UNEP, UNESCO, FAO and UNDP and administered by UNEP. Its secretariat is hosted by the German government and located on the UN campus, in Bonn, Germany. One thousand scientists from all over the world currently contribute to the work of IPBES on a voluntary basis.
