How #Helsinki cut food transport emissions using #sustainable #procurement | RSE et Développement Durable | Scoop.it
The City of Helsinki’s Palvelukeskus Helsinki (Helsinki Service Center) provides food for over 100,000 people every day. Schools, daycare centers and nursing homes in different parts of the city all receive food from the Service Center, which is responsible for both producing and delivering food.

The largest production plant is in Pakkala, Vantaa, which delivers approximately 15,000 kg of daily food to over 60,000 customers. The food delivery logistics encompass transportation to and from the Pakkala plant, between other production plants and the delivery of meals.

In 2018, the Service Center went out with a tender that included all of the three aspects of food delivery logistics with a contract value of over 8 million euro. The goal of the tender was to improve customer-oriented operations and their reliability, prevent gray markets, save costs and improve the environmental sustainability of the transport system.

All foodservice and hospitality companies with over 250 employees should have a food waste target in place and be measuring, reporting and taking action on food waste by 2026, according to a new industry action plan. Developed by WRAP, the Hospitality and Food Service (HaFS) sector Action Plan defines the steps companies must take to help to deliver the UK Food Waste Reduction Roadmap which sets out how the largest retailers, suppliers, and hospitality and food service companies will contribute towards the SDG 12.3 target of a 50% reduction in food waste by 2030.

The UK is a global leader in measuring food waste and supporting international food waste prevention projects, since it has been found that hundreds of thousands of tonnes of good food is wasted by the UK food industry every year.

The SDG 12.3:  “By 2030, halve per capita global food waste at the retail and consumer levels and reduce food losses along production and supply chains, including post-harvest losses”

Nestlé has announced that it is collaborating with other industry partners to design a fully recyclable, compostable fibre cup as part of the NextGen Consortium and Cup Challenge. The move is a part of the company's efforts to address the problem of plastic pollution, and a step towards its goal of making 100% of its packaging recyclable or reusable by 2025.

All commercial enterprises have a duty to try to minimise waste and take all opportunities to prevent, reuse, recycle or recover waste. With the introduction of recycling operations it is easier to comply with regulations and enables you to be better prepared for future legislation

#Changement #climatique | L'#engagement à réduire les #émissions des #fermes #laitières #UK | RSE et Développement Durable | Scoop.it

A dairy firm is pledging to make its operations carbon-neutral from cow to supermarket by 2050, including more than 2,000 farms in the UK. This will require "radical changes" over the coming decades, including developing new technologies, the dairy co-operative, Arla Foods, said. It admitted the target was "ambitious", but said it was achievable.
