The Impact of Deforestation on Carbon Storage
A one degree change in temperature could have catastrophic consequences.

One of the most notable influences on rising global average temperatures comes from deforestation. In fact, combined emissions from deforestation are higher than the annual emissions of any other country (apart from the U.S. and China) and contribute to roughly 12% of total annual greenhouse gas emissions.

This graphic from The LEAF Coalition takes a closer look at the impact deforestation has on global greenhouse gas emissions through carbon storage.

#Climat | Nine things #Davos 2020 is doing to be #carbon-#neutral  | RSE et Développement Durable | Scoop.it

For the first time, the World Economic Forum's (WEF) Global Risk Report claims that the top five risks the world is facing are all climate-related.
“It is the first time in the survey’s history that one category has occupied all five of the top spots," warns WEF’s president Børge Brende.
So for the fourth consecutive year, the WEF's annual meeting in Davos will be carbon-neutral, according to organisers. It's an event that sees more than 3,000 of the world’s leaders and decision-makers gather in Davos-Klosters, between 21-24 January, under the theme "Stakeholders for a Cohesive and Sustainable World”.

#Chocolat | Removing #ChildLabor, #Deforestation, and #Poverty from the Cost of #Chocolate | RSE et Développement Durable | Scoop.it

A 2017 investigative report published by the NGO Mighty Earth informed the industry at-large about the enormous problem of deforestation. The report focused on Ghana and Ivory Coast, the world’s two largest cocoa producing countries, who grew and exported 2.3 million metric tons — or 52 percent — of the world’s cocoa in 2016. Ghana and Ivory Coast have lost around 90 percent of their forests, one third of that for cocoa. Less than 11 percent of Ivory Coast remains forested. Satellite maps from 1990-2015 show the dramatic impact of deforestation on this country, where now only 200-400 elephants remain from an original population of hundreds of thousands. According to Mighty Earth, a single dark chocolate bar made with cocoa derived from deforested areas produces the same amount of carbon pollution as driving 4.9 miles in a car. Then try multiplying the impact by the billions of chocolate bars consumed by Americans alone each year.

Transparency is a key part of making the chocolate industry truly sustainable. EcoVadis’ CSR rating methodology and comprehensive assessments help companies to identify and manage risks, increase transparency and improve performance.

How the wine industry can build a more sustainable future

How the wine industry can build a more sustainable future | RSE et Développement Durable | Scoop.it
Climate change has been getting a lot of attention recently, and for good reason. The latest science shows the risk is manifesting faster and it’s not just fires and floods causing problems. A changing climate will gradually and increasingly impact us all. Science also tells us now is the time to take action for future generations and to ensure business resilience.

This is why Treasury Wine Estates has set an ambitious target of net zero emissions (Scope 1 and 2) by 2030. With 70% of these emissions generated from electricity, we have our sights on achieving 100% renewable electricity across our entire operations by 2024.

Targets are important for transparency and accountability. But how you achieve those goals is just as valuable.

As an industry with a significant agricultural footprint, there are three key areas wine producers can act on together to support the transition to a low-carbon future.

Verizon is strengthening its commitment to sustainability today, announcing the company will go carbon neutral by 2035 in its Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions. This will be achieved through a combination of reducing those emissions directly, migrating energy procurement in favor of renewable and clean energy and through the purchase of carbon offsets.
